A Stupid Sexist Put Down Inspired A Passionate Response That I Just Had To Share

I normally don't post these types of things here, you are more likely to find them on my FaceBook page, but this, this bought me to tears.  If only we could all find a voice as passionate as this.

Dear Man on the Bus

I would hope that I would have the courage to actually call someone out if I heard them say this, but would I given it is a public space?  Food for thought.

Thanks for popping by xxxx

  1. The man on the bus epitomises ugliness. The response was beautiful and moving. And yes, I too hope that I would have the courage to speak up. I think I could, I hope I could. Silence would imply acceptance...

    1. I can not believe that someone would even say that to someone else, but then unfortunately people like that do exist, thankfully not in my sphere of friends. The response was so powerful, so heartfelt. The way he took a moment before he started speaking and then it was just his words, no prompts, just heartfelt words which sadly he had a personal place from which to find them.

I would hope I would find the courage to stand up if I ever heard someone say something like that, but I'm not really sure I would, which causes me shame and disappointment in myself. As you are right, silence does imply acceptance.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts xxxx

  2. I did try so hard to understand the words but unfortunately (as when I tried on Facebook) many of his words were lost and I don't think it was just my hearing. I think I got the gist of what he was saying and it's certainly great to hear someone standing up for what he (and we too) considered such a dreadful wrong.

    1. I didn't have any trouble hearing what he was saying so maybe it was your hearing Mum, although in saying that he was very emotional when he was talking so probably not enunciating as well as you would have liked plus his accent may have made it worse as I know you have trouble watching people with strong accents on the TV and there is no teletext here.

It was pretty powerful and thanks for trying (twice) to hear what he was saying. xxx

  3. I didn't listen to the video, I've heard enough racist insults on news. I like to think that I'd speak up, but in reality I'd stay quiet. I'm not keen on having someone (the insulter) turn on me for trying to help. I know a lot of people say that keeping silent implies acceptance, but I keep silent in the interest of my own safety.

    1. I know what you mean River about keeping silent in the interest of your own safety, that is sort of what keeps me from saying anything. I think the guy in the video didn't stand up at the time for the put down he over heard and this was his way of saying something, it was pretty emotional and very powerful.
