You're So Vain

The price of vanity is sometime extreme and who would have thought I would get caught up in it?

I had a couple of skin growths on my face, one which was getting larger and people kept commenting on, so I went to my GP who thought it was nothing sinister but sent me to a lovely dermatologist to have it checked out.

Sure enough they were just aging thingies that some people get, especially if you have a Southern European background (which I don't really have although there is an ancestor from Portugal way back there somewhere). He also found a basal cell carcinoma on the front of my shoulder near my collarbone which to me didn't look like much. So well worth going as I would never have picked the small indentation in my skin as being cancer. We made a date for me to have surgery to have the cancer removed and then he suggested when I went back to have the stitches out he remove the growths on my face at the same time.

Yesterday was the cancer surgery day, and while he had me on the table, he decided to also do the face surgery as well.

Now I can tell you it hurt - having local anaesthetic in your face - not nice.

Today when I got up and looked in the mirror I was surprised to see I had a black eye - so now I feel really vain - I have gone through all this pain when really I didn't have too. Normally I don't bother too much about things like this as I believe you are who you are - so I am still in a quandary as to why I decided to go ahead.

So here is a warts and all look at my war wound - not for the faint hearted.

  1. Hmm, need to find photo of similar. But brutus surgeon took WRONG suspect facial mark off. Took bump not hole, so off back I wnet and ended up with eight instead of three stitches!

  2. It will go away in a day or two. I have to go to the dermatologist all the time to have basal cells removed. Just did it last week and still recovering. Ouch! Lovely being fair-skinned. I've had a few skin tags removed as well, about 10 years ago, because I was there and I thought why not. Meh.

  3. Oh, and thanks for the offer on the chocolate (wrote you back on my blog). So lovely of you to offer but I'm afraid it would melt in our current heat!! Hmmm... maybe in the fall? I might need it then after the divorce when I move out and into my own place with the kids. And let me know if there's anything you want from the States. xx

  5. Oh, you poor thing!! I'm sure it (along with the pain!) will subside, and I don't think it was at ALL a vain thing to do! Who knows what those bumps could've become?!

    Get well soon!!

  6. Oh my darling, it is not as bad as i thought it would be but your poor eye looks sad which I guess reflects just how you feel about it all. Imagine how lovely that patch will look when it is all healed and no more spot. I think my face almost looked worse afer laser treatment on the surface veins but that too faded.

  8. Thanks everyone for your comments - you should see my eye today - lets hope it goes down a bit as it is back to work for me tomorrow. Still I am happy to tell people what happened if they ask. It is after all just a black eye and a mark on my cheek.

  9. You poor thing! Apparently Manuka honey is renowned for its healing properties - you should pack that on. When my sis wripped all the skin off her face, arm and stomach in a cycling accident we literally packed vitamin E oil on her and she has no marks on her face.

  10. Ow ow ow, I totally missed this post! (sorry)

I hope by now the bruising has gone down. What a blessing, hey, that you decided to go get the skin growths removed, for the skin cancer was caught at a good early stage. Funny how things happen that way sometimes.

And you're not vain! I had a massive "thing" (ugly cauliflower wart) grow out the side of my jaw when pg with L, it finally fell off only this year but it was alarmingly big and getting bigger! If I had a dollar for every time someone scrunched up their face, pointed and said "What's THAT!"...
