The Wedding Dress - New Yet Old

So like over 2 billion people across the globe I tuned in to see the Dress - I was hoping for something really radical - but was happy if it was anything but the powder puff dress Diana wore - was I the only person who hated that dress?

I saw Pippa's gorgeous dress and my hopes were raised - I mean that dress was amazing.

Then I saw a peep as Kate got into the car and I was all - oh no boring. But I was wrong, when I saw the dress in full, it was beautiful, elegant and classic - taking us back to the beautiful times of the 50s. Why the 50s, well my Mum's wedding dress that she wore in 1953 could have been the inspiration for this dress - how about that Mum?

My paternal grandmother (she's the tiny one on the left of the photo of my Mum and her mother and mother in law), made my mother's dress, she was a dressmaker who earned her living that way after my paternal grandfather died when my father was still in primary school. She was an amazing seamstress and my Mother's dress what just beautiful. Hers was a lace jacket over the top of a strapless dress, but you wouldn't know that in the first photo of her below.

She may not have married a prince, in fact my father was anything but a prince in the end, but I think my Mother looked just like a princess in her hand made gown, sewn with love.

  1. Wow, uncanny resemblance! Right down to the neckline. I love the '50s/'60s inspired fashions. My mother's wedding dress was beautiful, I've always thought.

    I adored what Kate wore. I have some friends who thinkshe went too boring with it but I don't agree. It was a timeless choice. Just as Diana's really aged quickly (no you're not the only one, by the way, I really didn't like her dress! It need a good iron too!), I think Kate's will stand the test of time.

  3. Well would you look at that. That's amazing. Looks like even the edge of the veil was finished similarly. You could put this in the paper, "Royals steal Moms dress idea, descendants going to sue".

  4. @beingme, @ Taryn - Thanks ladies - as I said I was a little oh no boring, but then when I saw the whole dress it was just stunning and so classic and elegant. The second dress was beautiful too.

    @mybabyjohn - lol wouldn't that be a scream.

  5. As soon as I saw THE DRESS I was really amazed at how similar it was to mine back in '53 but I do think the bride on Friday was just a little more beautiful. She really is so lovely and natural.
    I didn't like Diana's dress either and so many folk have suggested it could have done with a good iron. Poor Diana.
    Thanks Karen for this blog....it was nice to see that pic again of your two grandmothers.

  6. Very similar, and both dresses are divine. I thought Kate looked regal and elegant, beautiful and timeless. I did think her hair was a bit boring though, but it suited the veil. I haven't seen any bad press about the dress thus far, thank goodness!

  7. I think Kate looked beautiful but I would have liked to have seen her hair up as I think down made it looked everyday and and updo would have been more regal. I too did not like Di's dress - too puffy and creased and that silly train! Although I loved her veil and tiara - gorgeous!

  9. @alliecat - yes I was a little disappointed in her hair, but not sure how else she could have worn it with that beautiful veil and tiara.

    @anonymous - she did indeed look very beautiful. Glad to know I am not the only one who didn't like Diana's dress, it seemed every one raved about it when she wore it. I was always a little ho hum.
